Rubber crumb or granulate can be produced using ambient, cryogenic or wet grinding techniques. Ambient ground crumb of a defined size is the first step in producing a high value devulcanized rubber recyclate for reuse using Recyclatech’s Technology.

Recyclatech's Technology uses patented biotechnological intellectual property to devulcanize rubber crumb from waste tyres and for the processed material to re-enter the high value markets of the materials chain.

Recyclatech’s reprocessed rubber can be substituted for natural and synthetic virgin rubber at approximately 50% of the cost.

The company has successfully negotiated a global licence in perpetuity, or assignation of the IP for the microorganisms and process, from Edinburgh Napier University.

The IP portfolio includes three fully validated patents:

  • European Patent EP 0917563 B1 (IP Title: Micro-organism which can desulphurise benzothiophene) that was granted on 2 February 2005 and has been validated in Germany, France and the United Kingdom
  • US Patent US 7,737,191 B2 (IP Title: Rubber Treatment Method) that was granted on 15 June 2010 by the US Patent and Trademark Office
  • European Patent EP 1597285 B1 (IP Title: Rubber Treatment Method) that was granted on 21 September 2011 by the European Patent Office (validated throughout Europe)

Patents will also be deposited for a number of new bacterial isolates shown to devulcanise rubber and on the process for devulcanisation and reuse of rubber crumb.
